What is orthodontic surgery?
Orthodontic surgeries may be required to help realign your jaw in more severe cases. This is usually necessary when the jaw problem is interfering with your ability to chew, breathe, or speak. In addition, a jaw problem can change the way your face appears, lowering your self-esteem and affecting your everyday life. At Dr. Doug Crosby Orthodontics, we have the skills and experience to address jaw problems and can intervene with surgical options when necessary. We can discuss your individual problem and create a customized treatment approach during your complimentary first appointment at our orthodontic facility in Texas.
Why is orthodontic surgery used?
Dr. Doug Crosby may recommend orthodontic surgery if you’ve suffered any of the below orthodontic problems and are old enough that your jaw has stopped developing (usually about 18 years old for boys and 16 years old for girls):
- Jaw deformity or abnormality
- Irregular bite/misaligned bite
- Poor self-esteem due to the appearance of your jaw
Patients are required to wait until they are old enough that their jaw has stopped developing; however, we may still be able to treat some of your other dental issues, such as tooth misalignment, in the years prior to your surgery.
What does orthodontic surgery involve?
Depending on the type of surgery you are undergoing and your specific dental concern, your orthodontic surgery procedure will vary. In general, you can expect that you may receive other dental treatment, such as braces, prior to your surgery. In those situations, you may need anywhere between six and eighteen months for the full treatment. After your braces treatment is complete, your orthodontist will finalize your treatment with your jaw surgery to correct the alignment issue.
Following surgery, your jaw should feel more comfortable and lined up with your upper teeth. In some cases, you may be required to stay the overnight for your recovery period, where your doctor can monitor you. After a couple weeks, you’ll be able to return to your normal activities and will likely be given a retainer to maintain your results.
